My first visit, on 15th March 1989! I sang Rosina in Rossini’s “Barber of Seville,” one of my signature roles at the time. Last season, I sang her again in Monte-Carlo − a trip down memory lane but also a curtsey before the company which engaged me as its director a few months earlier.
Continuity is one word – we bring back some favourites, such as Verdi’s Requiem or his magnificent opera “Don Carlo.” Then, new productions and stars such as Daniel Barenboim, Jonas Kaufmann, and Lang Lang. I am very excited about our new production of Lloyd-Webber’s “Phantom of the Opera,” a first in France! The story is set in the Paris Opera House − Le Palais Garnier − but has never been performed there. So the Phantom can spend his winter in Monaco's mellow climate and haunt the only other theatre built by Charles Garnier!
I cherish a love for the Mediterranean, its colour and light. I like Monaco’s mixture of French flair, Italian homeliness, and internationality. I am deeply grateful for the enthusiastic support of H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco and H.R.H. The Princess of Hanover. They are also benefactors of my period instrument orchestra, Les Musiciens du Prince – Monaco, with whom I can make incredible musical experiences. I love the Salle Garnier, its glamour, but also its coziness. When on stage, you feel that you are really communicating with the audience. I also love the Marché de la Condamine with its small stalls and fresh vegetables, and Plage du Larvotto with its white beach.
