Created on August 6, 1976 through the merger of the Monaco S.P.A. and l’Abri, the “S.P.A. et Abri de Monaco” has always worked for the protection and well-being of animals.
Initially placed under the presidency of H.S.H. Princess Antoinette, then of Baroness Elisabeth de Massy, it is now chaired by H.S.H. Princess Charlene of Monaco.
Thanks to the commitment and generosity of H.S.H. Princess Charlene, a new impetus has been given in order to provide the animals taken in with the best possible reception conditions.
After several years of searching for a suitable site, Their Serene Highnesses Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene laid the first stone of a modern and eco-sustainable shelter in Peille in September 2022, which was officially inaugurated on September 16, 2024.

The association’s purpose is primarily within Monaco, unless the nature of the activities requires them to be carried out outside the Principality:
• To ensure the protection and safeguarding, in all forms and by all means — time, material, moral, and legal — of all domestic or free animals.
• To improve by all possible means the conditions of both wild and domestic animals.
• To defend these animals and to fight against mistreatment.
• To promote, in cooperation with foreign associations and organisations pursuing the same goals, the international recognition of animal rights.
• To raise public awareness about animal protection and welfare.
