Every year, the cover of CREM magazine features Alan Walsh's work. An encounter with a singular artist whose world is both audacious and refined.
When I was a young boy, my father Brian worked in motorsport and my mother and I would often drive for hours to join him on the racetracks. I used to draw while leafing through my mother’s Vogue magazines or those of my dad on motorsport. Unbeknown to me at the time, it was then that my career began. At school, an amazing art teacher, Miss Chapman, encouraged me and helped to get the most out of me. After school, I attended an art college before starting out as a junior illustrator/designer in an advertising agency in England. My agency career then took me to Sydney for 16 years, via Los Angeles and New York. Even today, I still work with leading luxury brands. Those who know me would say I’m obsessive about my work – I love it!
Much of what I’m influenced by is from yesteryear: classic cars, elegant fashion, old movies and, of course, the world of Formula 1 with its strong colours and iconic brands. I like my work to be bold, clean, playful and elegant, to produce positive feelings. Since living on the Riviera, my palette has been inspired by the sky and Mediterranean light, using violets, blues, pinks and oranges. Boats and yachts, “Belle Époque” architecture, vintage champagne buckets and vintage photography books unearthed in antique markets on the Côte d’Azur also nourish my visual world, a blend of nostalgia and elegance… Living here has transformed my art: working with luxury hotels, observing terraces, the Croisette, the Place du Casino, watching the Historic Grand Prix, even palm trees inspire me every day.
I had been living in Sydney for 16 years where I owned two galleries with my wife, Emily. In 2016, on our first trip to the Riviera, we fell in love with Monaco. A year later, my collaboration with the Blue Coast brand during the Grand Prix enabled us to meet many clients. The idea of relocating here won us over in 2019, along with our dog Alfred. A passionate fan of motorsport, I always thought that Monaco united everything: glamour, art and speed. The dream of opening a gallery a stone’s throw from the racetrack came true in December, 2019. Five years later, even though the gallery closed during the pandemic, we still live in the Principality. Monaco is an ongoing source of inspiration and my work is now presented by several galleries around the world. I am, in fact, preparing for my first solo show in New York, then for Art Basel Miami.
On our arrival in Monaco, the Welcome Office was extremely helpful. It was there that we met Alexandre Boin, whose support has been pivotal. We soon became friends. When he joined CREM, our collaboration began with several front covers for magazines – creating a front cover is always a special moment for me! We hosted a sell-out exhibition evening together at CREM. Later on, we came up with the idea of a beach towel which I illustrated. The real highlight, though, was presenting H.S.H Prince Albert II of Monaco with a portrait of Princess Grace – a moment I’ll treasure forever. The Prince, who loves art, has a couple of my works on the walls in the Palace.
